The owner couldn’t have known that the woman was a gambler, or an expert at fixing the books
Our local HVAC company owner recently got scammed. I’m really hoping that he doesn’t have to close the door of the company because I really liked working with them. The HvAc company has been in our area for as long as I can remember. I can’t remember having a bad HVAC technician working with them. They have such a good reputation that when another HVAC company tried to come into the area, they couldn’t get a single customer to leave the old company. Their getting scammed didn’t have anything to do with any of their HVAC technicians. It wasn’t until he decided to hire a new secretary for the shop, that they began to have any problems. The new secretary really knew her way around the computers. I think she knew her way a little too well. She was able to have two sets of books without anyone realizing it. She would write up the invoices for the techs and the customers. There would be one set for them and one set for her. She didn’t need to go through the owner to issue those invoices. What the owner saw and what the customer paid for the new furnace, air conditioner, or repairs, were two different things. When everything was brought to light, the secretary had skimmed nearly $10,000 off the top of the business account. The owner couldn’t have known that the woman was a gambler, or an expert at fixing the books. She was quick to call the police when she realized there was a problem. I only hope they are able to keep their company going.
